LSD STUDIO is a Landscape Design studio founded in Santa Barbara, California. LSD STUDIO seeks to establish distinctive landscapes inspired by the locale that are efficient, livable and welcoming. We believe that spending time on site throughout each project is the most valuable way of generating and implementing a plan. Our process is thoughtful and meticulous and we understand that sometimes the best approach is to just listen.
PHILOSOPHY
At LSD STUDIO, we try to construct a little bit of natural magic. There isn't a secret to making this happen. We listen. We listen to you, our client. We listen to the land around us. We experience the particularities and uniqueness of each space and begin our collective conversation. Through a combination of rigor, thoughtful selection of material, playfulness and getting down and dirty, we create.
When we need direction or concepts for a new project, it is often done so on foot, out in the world. Picking up or scrambling over rocks, moving through sun-dappled oak groves, looking down, looking up, and looking out. We maintain an openness to detail and how the land has weathered and eroded, how vegetation exists and relates in chaotic harmony and often rejects order and formality. All these observations feed the subconscious. We draw on the moments experienced in the natural world and apply those to the new landscapes we are consciously forming.

MATERIALS
Santa Barbara has an entirely unique and rich ecosystem within which thrive numerous constituent microclimates. One side of a ridge can be enveloped with ocean fog while the other side gets blasted with hot dry Santa Ana winds blowing off the mountains. Each property varies greatly depending on the geographic location as well as the requirements and desires of our clients. The design and subsequent materials used reflect these nuances.
In general, we want to incorporate plantings that are native to California and drought-tolerant. It is not a hard and fast rule, but we do our best to take cues from the plants that thrive locally, no matter where the project is. We want the plants selected for each project to have purpose and import for that locale.
We want to bolster and support the environment. We want the materials and surfaces to feel in place. We respect and consider our materials, how they look, how they feel, and how they support our vision and the ecosystem.
